I have a good friend named Mildred, and she insists that I call her Millie. This song's title and a bit of its story (read below) make me think of her.
Some time a couple weeks ago, I was listening to some of Thrice's masterpiece (and I mean it!) release known as The Alchemy Index: Vols. III & IV: Air & Earth.
Essentially, it boils down to two six-song concept albums, each rich with its own theme (air, earth). A Song for Millie Michaelson comes from the air disk, and is written from the perspective of a main character in the movie "The Boy Who Could Fly." Read more here in the comments of the lyrics--I love how insightful the comments can be on songmeanings.net's lyrics. They often lend to the full telling of the story as intended by the artist, revealing spectacular depth and beauty in the writing. For this song, a simple song with simple phrases for lyrics, the background story enriches the work to an incredible level of depth and feeling. Congratulations to Thrice for twelve incredible songs, twelve beautiful, moving stories, and twelve more reasons to believe that musicians in our day and age still feel the challenge to create genuine art.
