Christmas brought me some books on learning to paint—two on the topic of watercolor and another on oil painting. My primary J-term goal is to learn some painting basics. I might be turning my room into a kind of dedicated painting/printmaking studio for the month. There is so much that I hope to learn right now, but for the moment, I see this as being of the greatest importance. I am taking a 2D art class Spring semester and want to be challenging myself in terms of how to express the unsaid yearnings of my soul instead of how to paint.

Granted, art and expression do not hinge on accurate representation. But with my total lack of skill and my similar lack of confidence, I could use all of the practice and instruction that I can get.

If there is one thing that I have had beat over my head the past half year or so, it's that I need to make/appreciate/fall in love with art, and that the ways that I know how to express my most inner thoughts and feelings are few.

So it is time to begin.
